6 Ingenious Ways to Use Your Self-Storage Unit This Christmas
The holiday season is upon us and with it comes all the hustle and bustle of the season as we order gifts, shop in person, and get our homes ready for visits from friends and family.
Whew…it makes us tired just thinking about it.
As you plan and prep, don’t forget to take advantage of your storage unit this holiday season. Although many people don’t even think about storage units during the holidays, the truth is they can be a lifesaver for busy families looking to get their home company ready. And, as one of Sydney’s most trusted storage companies, we thought we’d share 6 of our favorite ways we see clients using their units during Christmas.
1. Clear out living room clutter.
Your home may have plenty of space eleven months out of the year. But as Christmas draws near and you begin hosting friends and family in your space, you may find yourself feeling a bit claustrophobic.
Storage units are perfect for housing large pieces of furniture that take up tons of space in your home and limit the number of people who can fit comfortably in social areas like living and sitting rooms. Why not move out the extra-large sofa and coffee table to accommodate smaller seating for more guests? A storage unit provides the perfect holding space for furniture until party season is over.
2. Make room for the tree.
If you put up a Christmas tree, you’ve likely run into the challenge of getting the tree to fit in limited space. Few of us have a large, blank space in our room that can accommodate a holiday tree, so we end up taking Dad’s recliner and cramming it into the office space or guest room.
Moving those items into a storage unit ensures your items are stored securely and don’t take up valuable real estate elsewhere in your home while your tree is on full display.
3. Get ready for guests.
Sure, you call that extra room a “guest room” but, if you’re like most of us, that area is filled to the brim with boxes of items or has been partially converted into office space. The result is a space that isn’t really ready for guests and will likely make visitors feel as if they are imposing on you.
Get your extra space ready for company by moving anything that doesn’t scream “welcome, guests” to the storage unit. Clear out boxes, move the piles off the bed, and make sure there is some space in the closet or chest of drawers for guests to place clothing while they are in your home. Going the extra mile for your company will make them feel welcome and definitely get them in the holiday spirit.
4. Hide gifts from prying eyes.
We all have that one person in the home who is determined to find their Christmas presents before the big day. Whether you have a package sleuth under your roof or just don’t want to worry about the kids accidentally stumbling across their presents, a storage unit makes a wonderful hiding spot for gifts, ensuring no one will come across their package until Christmas morning.
5. Enjoy plenty of space for wrapping.
Does anyone else feel as though there just isn’t enough room for wrapping gifts? It seems as though every roll of paper is at least 2 meters long and requires the use of the entire dining room table. Then there’s the scissors and tape and ribbon…and all of it must be cleaned up before you can serve dinner to the family. And…unless you are one of those maniacs who gets all their wrapping completed in a single sitting…you are forced to pack everything up and pull it out again no less than seventeen times during the holiday season.
A lesser-known but equally ingenious use of a storage unit is that of a wrapping station. Simply set up a table in your unit and use it to wrap to your heart’s content. And the best part? There’s no need to pack everything away when you’re finished. Leave all your ribbons, bows, bags, and paper right on the table. It will be ready and waiting when you’re ready to wrap again.
6. Declutter after the holidays.
Once the big day has come and gone and you’re ready to untrim the tree and take back your space, a storage unit makes the perfect place to store all your décor until the holiday season rolls back around next year.
